Curly annual. Height 250-300 cm. Flower diameter 5-8 cm. In the "sea" of green foliage, its luxurious gramophones flare up with bright lights. Flowering is very abundant and long (until late autumn). The plant is able to climb any support and weave a living carpet of amazing beauty on it in a short time. That is why it is widely used and will be a worthy decoration for retaining walls, gazebos, as well as balcony containers and flowerpots.
Sowing: in May in a permanent place to a depth of no more than 1.0 cm.
Seeds require pre-sowing treatment: before sowing, soak the seeds in a damp cloth for 3-4 hours, then break the seed shell - prick or rub with sandpaper. Shoots appear on the 10-15th day, the crops are thinned, maintaining a distance of 40-50 cm between plants.
Care: prefers fertile, well-drained soil, sunny location and watering (as the soil dries out), fertilizing. For feeding, complex mineral fertilizer is used.
Flowering: from late June to late autumn.
Rules of care.
Light and warmth are all the morning glory needs. It cannot tolerate even minor frosts. It is advisable that the landing site is also windless.
Soil: loose, but moderately nutritious. If the plant is too fertile, it will become fat to the detriment of flowering. You also need to be moderate with nitrogen fertilizers; from their excess, farbitis only increases the green mass. Water regularly, but without stagnant water. A wire, fishing line, wire or mesh is suitable as a support for morning glory.
Reproduction: by seeds in May, immediately to a permanent place, plant 2-3 seeds per hole at once. Seedlings are grown in March-April, the seeds can be immediately planted in peat pots, morning glory does not really like transplanting. For quick germination, seeds are soaked for a day in warm water. Shoots will appear in a week or two. When the plants grow up, twigs are stuck near each one; this vine needs support from infancy. Morning glory is planted in the ground directly in a peat pot, the distance between plants is 15-20 cm.
The best landing spot: south side of the house. By mid-summer, morning glory can completely cover the wall of a house. It grows well on balconies and window sills on a sunny and windless side. Does not tolerate transplantation well.
Diseases: the most common is rotting of tubers. It occurs from stagnation of water or excessive waterlogging.
! By the way, it can also be used as an hanging plant. To do this, morning glory is planted in a container (pot), and the shoots droop down freely - you get a magnificent green cascade! (Just be sure to have good drainage at the bottom of the pot).
Traditionally, morning glory is planted around a gazebo or arch.
Eng.: Tall Morning Glory. Bot. syn.: Convolvulus purpureus L., Ipomoea hirsutula Jacq., Pharbitis diversifolius.
Try a non-standard move:
1. Place the morning glory deep in the flower bed. To do this, install a pyramidal support there. Such a composition will immediately make the flower garden interesting, complex, and divide it into zones.
2. Weave something “like a ball” out of twigs and throw morning glory on it, place the figure in the center of the lawn - here you have an original author’s work.
3. Cover dried trees and stumps with morning glory.
